AfriCart – a handcart for Africa

ED302 – design & technology

06.1 Appropriate Tools

The AfriCart is designed to be built by ‘village’ carpenters with a minimal investment in commonly available carpenters tools.

Any carpenter capable of producing a chair, table, or window frame can easily build an AfriCart, although it has been found that many village carpenters have difficulty following a (complex) dimensioned construction drawing.

Basic Tools:

africart_tenon_saw

• Tenon Saw

africart_chisels

• Chisels

africart_tenon_guide

• Mortice Gauge

africart_square
Carpenter’s Square

africart_plane

• Jack Plane

africart_mallet

• Wooden Mallet

africart_sharpening_stone

• Sharpening (Oil) Stone

africart_pinning_inside_big

• Long Clamps (Not essential but a homemade equivalent would be very handy).

africart_corner_clamping

• Corner Clamps (Not essential but a homemade equivalent would be very handy).

Additional Tools:

• Ruler / Tape Measure etc
• Pencil
• Smoothing Plane
• Hand Drill (with 6mm bit)
